T15610065 A federal jury on Friday found that an Atlanta restaurant did not violate the civil rights of an ex-NBA All Star Joe Barry Carroll and a friend who said they were banished from the bar because they were black. Jeffrey Bramlett, the attorney from Carroll and Joseph Shaw, was seeking at least 3 million in damages for the humiliation and embarrassment suffered when a security guard led them from the Tavern at Phipps in August 2006. They were escorted out because they refused to give up their seats to two white women. However, the jury of nine white members and three black members took just 15 minutes to rule Carroll and Shaw were not the victims of racial discrimination. The defense argued the bar had a longstanding policy, where men give up their seats for women in a crowded barroom.

Robinson, 35, spent a season with the Charlotte Hornets and three with the Chicago Bulls. He hasn't played professionally since 2008. The seven-team National Basketball League also includes the Saint John Mill Rats, Quebec Kebs, London Lightning, Oshawa Power, Moncton Miracles and Summerside Storm. Abandon Ship? Don't Jump Off the Eagles' Bandwagon Just Yet
I'm lucky to be alive. On Sunday evening, while sitting comfortably on the Eagles' bandwagon, I was trampled by an exodus of millions of Eagle fans. Only Swoop (Birds' mascot) and myself remain. The road's now bumpy and the sky's grown dark. Nonetheless, I am alive, and contrary to popular belief, so are the Philadelphia Eagles.I know what you're thinking... I'm a biased idiot who can't come to grips with the failure of another season... you're probably right. After all, I once rode the Eagles' bandwagon alone as Richie Kotite drove it straight off a cliff, but that's beside the point. The Eagles are in the playoffs. The conclusion to their 2009 season has yet to be written. A win on Saturday won't be easy. In fact, it will take a mammoth effort. As Harvey Dent (yes, the Batman guy) once said, "The night is always darkest before the dawn." Here's my crusade to bring everyone back on board, or at the very least, my dad.You'll argue: Dallas beat Philadelphia twice already this year, handedly too.Very, very true. The Eagles' performances against the Cowboys have been two of their ugliest outings. This is the toughest case to argue, by far. I'm up to the challenge. Don't worry, I promise not to berate you with the cliché, "it's tough to beat a team three times in one season." I don't buy that garbage anyway. The Eagles fell to the Giants on three occasions in the 2000 season. Last year the Ravens lost to the Steelers thrice (not a real word, I know). Defeating the same team three times happens more often than not, so I'm avoiding that defense. Instead, I'll build my case on the experience factor, the propensity of Andy Reid's teams to bounce back after devastating losses, and most importantly, "Any Given Sunday."Tony Romo has... count 'em... zero playoff victories. Donovan McNabb has nine. McNabb hasn't been the most electrifying postseason quarterback, but winning is winning. McNabb understands what it takes to win in January. The same is true for Wade Phillips (0) and Reid (10). At the two most important positions on any football team, the Eagles hold an overwhelming 19-0 advantage.I could spend an entire weekend detailing Reid's horrible personnel decisions (early years), play calling, and the granddaddy of them all; game management. Why waste the time? There are two things every Eagle fan wants to change but can't. 1. Reid's game management. 2. Reid's sideline style when the temperature is above 60 degrees. With that out of the way, Reid is exceptional at rallying his team. See Arizona on Thanksgiving in '08 after getting crushed by Baltimore, or the Eagles rebounding (12-2 run to close the season) after starting the '03 season with humiliating losses to the Bucs and Patriots (to open the Linc nonetheless), OR overcoming McNabb's injury and two consecutive blowouts to Tennessee and Indy in '06 to finish 5-0 and win the NFC East with Jeff Garcia. Like the previous run-on sentence, the list goes on and on. The media perceives Reid's short term memory and "we need to do a better job there" shtick as arrogance. In reality, his example to forget and move on requires his team to do the same.Any Given Sunday. No, not the movie, the principle. The Giants winning Super Bowl XLII, the Cardinals' extraordinary run in the 2008 playoffs, the Browns shocking the Steelers to ruin Pittsburgh's season (Ok, that was a Thursday game). Any team, in any stadium, on any day, can win a football game. We see this more in the NFL than any other league. Let's wait to hear the fat lady before we cry choke.You'll argue: The Eagles' offense is too inconsistentAgreed, 113% agreed. The Eagles' offense is wildly inconsistent. They're unstoppable for one quarter and floundering the next. You're right, if only we had the offensive consistency of the Dallas Cowbo..... what's this? Another volatile offense? Indeed. Dallas is one of the NFL's hottest teams, but even Romo and company struggle to keep their collective foot on the gas. Take a look at their second half points over Dallas' last eight games; 7*, 3, 7, 14*, 14*, 7, 3, 7. (The *'s represent garbage TDs that were scored in defeats with 38, 58, and 2 seconds remaining in decided games, respectively.) That's an average of 5.13 second half points, or 7.75 if you include the garbage TDs. Not exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Don't bother arguing that Dallas had already clinched victory either. In four of those eight games, they trailed in the second half (eventually lost three). Another game was against New Orleans, who nearly came back. Only in the remaining three games did Dallas lead by two or more scores (OAK, WASH, PHI).You'll argue: I hate it when Donovan McNabb smiles when he should be steamingMe too. I know most of you just slammed your fist on the desk and thought (maybe shouted), "oh no he didn't." Well, I did. If McNabb plays another 5-6 seasons in the NFL, he'll likely surpass Elway in nearly every statistical category except interceptions. I'll now wait seven seconds for those of you who fell off your chair to get situated....... We good? Let's continue. Over the course of his 16 year career, Elway completed 60% or more of his passes in only three seasons, finishing with a career mark of 56.9%. McNabb is currently at 59% for his career. He's surpassed the 60% plateau four times in his career, including the last three seasons. McNabb doesn't have the Super Bowl wins that Elway has... yet. Old Johnny finally struck Super Bowl gold in years 15 and 16 of his illustrious career. While McNabb has won plenty of big games throughout his career (you don't win 9 playoff games and 4 ½ division titles without winning big games; I can list them if you want), he has yet to summit the championship mountain. I believe in McNabb. I think he's improving. I know he won't lay a stinker come Saturday. If only he could play safety too...

Chargers Lose Nail-Biter to Ravens
The San Diego Chargers have been bestowed with high hopes going into the 2009 season. Many are even speaking of this team as a favorite to emerge from the AFC conference and make its way to the Super Bowl.This is a team that has seen multiple playoff berths over the past few years, and a core of players that continues to improve (i.e. Philip Rivers - a contender for the MVP award this season in the minds of many - Darren Sproles, and more) should propel a highly effective offensive team to a great place this season.The Chargers opened up the season with a near loss in Oakland. The team had been heavily favored to win this game against an Oakland team that could barely win a game last year. While the Chargers came away with a 24-20 win, this was done in anything but simple fashion and they nearly blew what should have been an easy game. Chalk it up to an off day.Come week 2, with a more challenging game against a visiting Ravens team. The fact that the Chargers were at home in front of an extremely passionate fan base gives the team the edge, but they somehow lost this game to Baltimore, despite two great opportunities to score a touchdown late in the 4th quarter, either which would have given the team the win.So maybe the Ravens are one of the better teams in the NFL. After all, they made the playoffs last year and their youth has improved this year.Still, the obvious flaw in this Chargers team seems to be its defense. Can the team clean up its defensive unit from here? It may need to.

Most Common Penalties in (American) Football
For all of you "newbies" to football, when watching a game, you may be thinking that just about anything goes. This is football, after all. However true, there are rules that need to be followed and when an offending player commits an infraction, his team must be penalized.In the NFL, when a player commits a penalty, the Referee announces the penalty to the whole world. He will announce what the penalty is, and who it is on. For example, he will say something like, "Holding, number 74, Offense". This tells everyone that number 74 on the Offense committed a holding penalty. In the NFL, you can run, but you can't hide. When a player commits a penalty, the Referee (or one of the other Officials that spotted the infraction) tosses a yellow "FLAG" (which is really a weighted down hanky) into the air. So, anytime you are watching a game on TV and you see or hear the word "FLAG", you will know that a player committed a penalty. While there are a number of different penalties that players can commit, I am only going to mention the most common ones. Here they are:- False start - this occurs when a player on Offense (usually an Offensive Lineman) moves or flinches before the ball is snapped. This is usually a pretty easy penalty to spot. It usually occurs because a player is trying to get a jump on his opponent before the play starts and inadvertently moves before the snap. False start costs the Offense five yards.- Holding - this occurs when a player grabs hold of his opponent in an illegal manner. While it may appear that holding occurs on just about every play, the Officials must pick and choose their battles. Usually, unless it is pretty obvious, the Officials will let this go. Holding costs a team ten yards if it is on Offense, and five yards and an automatic first down if on the Defense.- Offsides - usually occurs on the Defense, but an Offensive player may be Offsides as well. Offsides occurs when a player (other than the Center) has any part of his body in or beyond the neutral zone when the ball is snapped. The neutral zone is the area between the lines of scrimmage (or, the length of the ball when it is on the ground at the start of a play). Offsides costs a team five yards.- Encroachment - this penalty is similar to Offsides in that a player enters the neutral zone before the snap, but on this penalty, he makes contact with an opposing player. The penalty on this is five yards.So, when watching the game, look for these common penalties. Pretty soon, you'll be calling them before the Officials.


Fantasy Football 2009 - Drafting Kickers and Defense
The NFL season is looming as Fantasy owners should start preparing for their drafts now. Just like every fantasy sport, the draft is critical in determining right off the bat whether you will be success or not during the year. A strong draft usually correlated to a strong season. Here kickers and defenses are looked at and here are a few tips on how to draft both to optimize your team.KickersThe best advice for drafting a kicker: do not draft them early or if you are in an auction league, do not spend more than a buck on a kicker. Kickers carry little influence in the fantasy world and when the season is completed, most of them carry very similar stats and thus a higher draft position for one player over another is not warranted. Some leagues use formats that reward longer field goals, such as 4 points for 40 yard kicks and 5 points for 50 yard kicks, so some owners think this means they should go after the guy that plays on a team that has an offense that sputters. This strategy may pay off a couple times, but as far as the kicker goes, a kicker on a good team that scores a lot and he accumulate many extra points will end up having similar overall stats to a kicker that hits a fifty yard once every four games. The other thing with kickers is that there is a huge amount of variance/variables with them as well as a slim degree of separation between the players in the category. Save yourself some time and snag a guy that kicks and is usually accurate. A guy like Bironas carries more value because of his accuracy, but even he does not stick out from the pack enough to warrant any consideration earlier in the draft or any bid more than a dollar or two.DefensesPicking a defense often times feels like a luck of the draw selection. The Green Bay Packers scored the most defensive touchdowns with 7, which earned them a lot of praise as being a solid fantasy choice at defense. However, they really are not that spectacular of a choice as they allowed 23.8 points a game, which is in the bottom half of all NFL teams (The Steelers were the best at 13.9 points per game). In a 10 team league, picking a defense should not be tricky. You want one that does not get blown out each week and has the potential to cause a few fumbles and picks. Last season there were 9 defenses that allowed under 20 points per game on average, 7 defenses that intercepted the ball 20 times or more, and 8 teams that sacked the other team's QB more than 40 times. The point is that in 10 or 12 man leagues, the defenses all line up the same by the end of the year so don't spend much on a defense or draft one ridiculously high. I was witness to the Pittsburgh Steelers being selected in the middle of last seasons draft, and though they put up some solid numbers across the board, the ended up having some stats that were closely rivaled by several other teams, like the Titans.Saving money in an auction draft on positions allows you to spend more on your key positions such as at the pivotal running back spot. For standard drafts, waiting to select a defense or a kicker may increase your overall offensive potential. Knowing when to draft what is a trick that a lot of owners are not aware of, so now that you do know it should overall improve your team.

The New England Patriots Asked - Are You Ready? - And Matt Cassel Said - I'll Get the Job Done!
We said it, we wrote it and we predicted it!! "Matt Cassel ready to rumble!" And not only did he roared, he did a respectable job of making good decisions. He didn't put the team in any bad situations and made some clever positive plays. He managed that 19-10 score against the Jets on Sunday like a champ!!Cassel has plenty of talent around him and he has a career 61.4 completion percentage (although, to be fair, he's only thrown 57 passes in his NFL career), but it's hard to say much about his football IQ given his restricted playing time. Even if he's not able to oversee information as quickly as Warner or Brady, he does have one thing going for him: understanding with the offense and why not? He has been watching and reviewing for years. To be more honest about the situation and game facts, there's a difference between knowing where to go with the ball during no-pressure practices and being able to imitate that in high-stress game conditions.The first half wasn't exactly the best football you've ever seen, but the Pats did enough to walk into the locker room with a 6-3 lead. Though the second half wasn't much better-looking, Brett Favre showed why you have to limit your excitement when he hits on fear in the end zone, because he'll follow that up a week later with a poor, poor decision that leads to an interception (this one by Brandon Merriweather), an interception that essentially loses the game. We said it and it happened.Favre's interception led to the Patriots' best drive of the game, resulting in a Sammy Morris touchdown and the invigorating Pats immediately followed by forcing a three-and-out and kicking a field goal. Though the Jets answered with a touchdown of their own, it wasn't enough.Honestly, there was no justification for the Jets to lose this game. Favre was hired to make a difference and he simply didn't do that. While the Jets' defense did a good job for the most part of making the Patriots chip for yards and settle for field goals, the offense should have been able to perform better against an elderly, soften defense and whether it's fair or not it's on Favre to make that happen. We will give him some time and write an article on Brett in a couple of weeks.Now, for the next games, will Matt Cassel be able to change a play at the line of scrimmage based on the defense? Identify the open receiver? Get him the ball before getting smoked by a linebacker? We have many, many questions, and bottom line is...we are not talking about field experience, who slept better Sunday night, Matt Cassel or his conscience? We believe his heart!!


To Mario Williams - We Are Sorry
On behalf of all of the NFL fans, and particularly the Houston Texan fans, I would like to say I am sorry Mario Williams. I don't believe there was a soul out there who thought that taking you with the first overall pick two drafts ago was the right move. The fans of your own team that drafted you were shouting "overrated" when your official draft announcement was made. How could the Houston Texans select you, and pass up on the best college football player since "stabbin" O.J. Simpson himself? If you saw any highlights of last night's game against the Broncos or have been following Mario this season at all, you can finally see where the Texans' management was coming from. He was lightning quick for a guy who's 6'9 going around Selvin Young to make one his 3 sacks on the day.As of today, Mario Williams is second in the entire league with 13 sacks, only 1/2 a sack back from Patrick Kerney. Following a slow start to his career last year, Williams has made a real statement this season. During the 2006 season, Williams registered 47 total tackles and 5 sacks. Through week 15, he has 53 tackles and 13 sacks. That's one hell of an improvement. And remember, this kid is only 22 years old. The saying "the sky is the limit" truly applies to him. He has the potential to be leading the league in sacks for the next decade.Which brings me to the other half of the conversation. Let me state this first: I love Reggie Bush. He made me more interested in college football than I have ever been. There was nothing more exciting than watching him make the rest of the country look like middle schoolers or diving for the end zone with reckless abandon, flipping in midair.That being said, I truly believe the Texans made the right move in passing on him with the first overall pick. Bush is a gifted player, but I'm not so sure how equipped he is to be the #1 back on a team, in a one-back system. He played well complementing Deuce McAllister. But without that complementary back, I believe his skills are limited. Remember, he played alongside LenDale White in college. If we look at the statistics, Bush compiled 565 rushing yards with 6 tds on the ground and 742 receiving and 2 tds in in 2006. Those are very respectable numbers. I believe he was even the #1 receiving target on his team. But looking at 2007, he hasn't progressed like Mario Williams has. His stats this year before his injury were 581 rushing with 2 tds and 417 receiving with 2 tds. That may be on pace for more rushing yards if healthy, but definitely less touchdowns. Add that to much less receiving yards, and you have yourself a decline from his first season to next.This doesn't mean I don't think Reggie Bush can end up being a great running back in the NFL. All that this means is that having a destructive defensive end like Mario Williams anchoring the defense will be more beneficial to them in the long-run than having a running back like Reggie Bush.
